Massachusetts Teacher’s Union Uses Member Funds to Attack Constitutional Rights

The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) has committed substantial union resources to keeping the worst attack on civil rights in modern history, Chapter 135 of the Acts of 2024, in place.



The MTA has donated $500,000 to the anti-civil rights committee “Yes for a Safe Massachusetts” to defeat the citizens petition to repeal Chapter 135. Other unions followed their lead with a total of an additional $85,000. This total represents 85% of all the money raised.


GOAL has consistently argued that these provisions unfairly target lawful gun owners and treat an entire class of citizens differently simply because they choose to exercise a constitutionally protected civil right.

“The law passed in 2024 represented a political tantrum in response to an historic civil rights ruling from the Supreme Court,” said Jim Wallace, Executive Director of GOAL. “The language and impact of the law is bad enough, but the way it came to be was the most corrupt process I have ever witnessed. As a former union member, I am left astonished that the MTA would support such a corrupt assault on civil rights.”

That is why we describe any support for Chapter 135 as an attack on the Constitution. Additionally, this behavior encourages political corruption.


Chapter 135 has so dramatically changed life in the Commonwealth for the Second Amendment community that GOAL has had to become a litigation organization just trying to keep good people out of jail.


Teachers, education professionals, and other MTA members who lawfully own firearms should be asking: Why is OUR union spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to preserve laws that threaten our own members with criminal prosecution for exercising their Second Amendment rights?
