News for Kids & Gun Safety
The National
Safety Council reported that in 1999 there was a 53% REDUCTION in
accidents with a firearm in the last ten years.
This news is
especially good when it comes to kids. The same report places children
ages 14 and under at a firearm accident mortality rate of 0.39 per day.
While that number is still too high, it is a figure groups that have
taken part in the Eddie Eagle GunSafe® program can be very proud of and
will continue to work to reduce.
In
percentages, children aged 14 and under killed in a firearms accident
only accounted for 0.49% of all firearms related deaths in 1999. In that
same year, accidents of any age only accounted for 2.42% firearms
deaths.
The most serious issues still continue to be CRIME
and SUICIDES that accounted for approximately 28,174, or 97.58%
of all firearm related deaths in 1999.
